When You Reach Me
Author - Rebbeca Stead
Grade/Reading Level - 6 and up
Do you like books in general? Do you like books that mess with your mind? Well then you would love this book. When You Reach Me, by Rebecca Stead, is the most thrilling, exciting book! It is full of cliffhangers.
Miranda, a normal New York sixth grader is best friends with another sixth grader named Sal. Sal gets punched by this new kid named Marcus and things start to get weird. The Laughing Man (This homeless guy who lives under a
mailbox) is acting stranger than usual. Then Miranda gets the first note and more notes keep coming. Meanwhile, Miranda’s mom is dating this Scottish man named Richard whose right leg is two inches shorter than his left, causing him to put a two inch platform on his right shoe. Miranda comes home one day from school finding her apartment door open! It turns out, someone stole Richard’s special shoe! That same weekend Miranda got a note, asking where their key is.
This story can connect to anyone’s life because I bet you’ve JUMPED TO CONCLUSIONS. The lesson that I think the author is trying to teach is ‘don’t jump to conclusions’ because if you do, you might get the wrong information and
spread rumors. Rumors might get you in trouble. Miranda doesn’t jump to conclusions until the notes make sense.
I recommend this Newberry award book to anyone who likes reading even a little bit!
Check out other books by Rebecca Stead:
I liked the book because of all the characters and I also liked the book because it starts out with realistic fiction but then...read the book to find out.
